Haryana Cabinet clears job for ASI’s wife
ASI’s wife to get government job as Haryana Cabinet gives nod
The Haryana Cabinet has approved a government job for the wife of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep Kumar Lathar, who allegedly died by suicide in October last year. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced the decision after a Cabinet meeting held in Chandigarh on Thursday. The move is aimed at providing financial stability and support to the bereaved family.
According to the chief minister, Santosh Kumari, the wife of the late ASI, will be appointed as a Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) in Mathematics. She will be given a Group B government post at the Campus School of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) in Rohtak. The appointment was cleared unanimously by the state Cabinet.
Cabinet decision and background of the case
Addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Saini said the government had carefully considered the matter before taking the decision. He said the job offer was made as part of the government’s responsibility to support the family of a police officer who died under tragic circumstances.
ASI Sandeep Kumar Lathar was posted in the cyber cell in Rohtak. He allegedly shot himself dead on October 14, leaving behind a handwritten final note. In the note, Lathar reportedly made serious allegations of corruption against a senior police officer, late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who was serving in the same district at the time.
Earlier, IPS officer Y Puran Kumar had also allegedly died by suicide on October 7 at his residence in Chandigarh. The back-to-back deaths of two police officers created a major stir within the police department and drew public attention across Haryana. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the allegations mentioned in the note are still part of official records.

While announcing the government job for Santosh Kumari, Saini said the state government stands with families of police personnel and government employees during difficult times. He added that providing employment support helps families cope with sudden financial loss and uncertainty.
The chief minister clarified that Santosh Kumari would be appointed as a PGT Mathematics teacher, a position that matches her qualifications. The appointment will be made at the Campus School of MDU, Rohtak, ensuring job security and a stable income for the family.
Expansion of welfare schemes for women
Apart from the compassionate job appointment, the Haryana Cabinet also approved the expansion of the Deen Dayal Lado Lakshmi Yojana, a flagship welfare scheme aimed at supporting women financially. Under this scheme, eligible women beneficiaries in Haryana receive monthly financial assistance from the state government.
Chief Minister Saini said that at present, women from families with an annual income of up to ₹1 lakh are given ₹2,100 every month under the scheme. The Cabinet has now decided to widen the scope of the scheme by including additional beneficiaries.
Under the new expansion, women whose children score more than 80% marks in Classes 10 and 12 will also be eligible to receive the monthly assistance of ₹2,100, even if they do not fall under the earlier income-only criteria. The move is intended to encourage education and reward academic performance among students, while also supporting their mothers financially.
The chief minister informed that more than one lakh women have already applied for benefits under the Lado Lakshmi Yojana. At present, around eight lakh women across Haryana are receiving financial assistance through the scheme. He described the response as encouraging and said it reflects the need for such support programmes.
The Deen Dayal Lado Lakshmi Yojana is open to both married and unmarried women between the ages of 23 and 60 years. Eligibility is based on family income, which should not exceed ₹1 lakh annually. With the latest expansion, the government hopes to bring more women under the scheme’s coverage.
Saini also highlighted the state government’s efforts under the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” campaign. He said Haryana has made steady progress in improving the sex ratio, which has reached 923 in 2025. This improvement, he said, shows the positive impact of sustained awareness campaigns, welfare schemes, and stricter enforcement of laws against gender discrimination.
The chief minister reiterated that the government remains committed to women’s empowerment through education, financial assistance, and social reform. He said initiatives like compassionate appointments and welfare schemes are part of a broader strategy to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in Haryana.
With the Cabinet’s latest decisions, the state government has signalled its intent to combine social welfare with administrative support, aiming to address both individual hardships and broader developmental goals.
